JULIA DAVIS

Several months ago I wrote an article about whistleblower Julia Davis. If you’re taking the time to read this article I highly suggest you read the entirety of that article which contains multiple video of Julia and her film producer husband “BJ” Davis.

Julia Davis was a former U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer who claimed she discovered a serious security problem at the San Ysidro border crossing in 2004. She said 23 people from countries considered “special interest” entered the United States on July 4 despite what she believed were inadequate security checks. After she reported her concerns to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, she says she faced retaliation from DHS, including investigations and pressure that eventually forced her out of her job. She later won a discrimination case against DHS, with a court finding that the agency had acted illegally.

Julia Davis alleged years of harassment against her family, including a major federal raid on their home in 2005. Davis and her husband were charged with felonies, but the charges were eventually dismissed, and a judge reportedly declared them “factually innocent.”

DECEASED ACTRESS BRITTANY MURPHY, DECEASED HUSBAND SIMON MONJACK & JULIA DAVIS

Brittany Murphy entered the story at a crucial point in the FBI’s investigation into her husband Simon Monjack. By early 2007, Monjack had moved on from the people involved in the The White Hotel dispute and was engaged to actress Brittany Murphy. An FBI interview conducted on March 9, 2007, specifically notes that Monjack had moved on to Murphy and that the people interviewed did not believe Murphy herself was involved in his alleged scheme. However, they told investigators that they believed she was aware of Monjack’s carefully constructed image and lifestyle. This is significant because the allegations against Monjack centered in part on his claims that he was wealthy, highly connected in Hollywood, and capable of financing major film projects.

The FBI material therefore places Murphy in Monjack’s orbit during the period when investigators were examining allegations of deception and financial misconduct—but it does not establish that she was a participant, although attempts to portray her in a bad light. The investigation documented allegations that Monjack had misrepresented his wealth and connections, promised investors and filmmakers money that did not materialize, and used claims about prospective financing to persuade others to spend or advance money. In one instance described by the FBI, a producer issued a $12,000 check after being told a $250,000 investment was coming, only for the promised investment never to arrive. The FBI ultimately closed the case after determining that the evidence did not establish a federal fraud violation. Thus, the documentary record supports saying Murphy was aware of aspects of Monjack’s persona and lifestyle according to interviewees, but it does not support claiming she knowingly participated in his alleged fraud.

My family would request Brittany Murphy’s entire FBI File. The below is what we received.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MURPHY, MONJACK, AND WHISTLEBLOWER DAVIS

Former Department of Homeland Security whistleblower Julia Davis and actress Brittany Murphy became connected through Davis’s legal battle with the government and the controversy that later surrounded Murphy’s death. Davis, who worked as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer, reported security and management concerns within DHS in 2004. She subsequently faced numerous investigations and what she described as government retaliation, becoming a prominent federal whistleblower.

According to account, Murphy and her husband, Simon Monjack, became friends with Davis and sympathized with her situation. Simon Monjack knew “BJ” David in the hollywood film industry as BJ Davis was a film producer. Murphy was reportedly supportive of Davis and was described as a potential witness or supporter in Davis’s legal fight against DHS. After Murphy died in December 2009 at age 32, the official cause of death was reported as pneumonia and severe anemia. Years later, Davis worked with Murphy’s father, Angelo Bertolotti, to challenge the official explanation. Those claims contributed to theories that Murphy’s death could somehow have been connected to her association with Davis and the government’s alleged retaliation against the whistleblower.

According to the 2012 HuffPost UK article, the documentary Top Priority: The Terror Within alleged that Brittany Murphy and her husband, Simon Monjack, became caught up in Julia Davis’s conflict with the Department of Homeland Security. Davis claimed that Murphy defended her against what Davis described as false allegations made by DHS and that Murphy later provided a sworn statement through her attorneys. The documentary further alleged that Murphy and Monjack were placed on a DHS watch list, that ICE was attempting to remove Monjack from the United States because of his expired visa, and that his arrest over the visa was part of an effort to intimidate the couple after Murphy supported Davis.

The article says Davis viewed Murphy and Monjack as victims of the same government retaliation she believed she had experienced. Davis claimed they were being watched, while journalist Alex Ben Block reported that Monjack had told him they believed helicopters were surveilling them and that their phone was bugged. The article then connects these allegations to Murphy’s death in December 2009 and notes that the documentary suggested a government connection.
